Main Street Volunteers at Houston Arboretum & Nature Center
On May 13, 2023, Main Street volunteered at the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center. The Arboretum is a 155-acre non-profit nature sanctuary encompassing woodland, meadow, savanna, and wetland habitats. The organization plays a vital role in protecting native plants and animals in the city’s heart, where development threatens their survival. The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center, one of the first nature education facilities for children in the state of Texas, provides services to over 400,000 visitors annually and nature education for more than 10,000 children annually.
Main Street’s team of volunteers was given a special opportunity to tour the Sensory Garden, which Main Street supported in building and one of the latest additions to the Arboretum’s ever-changing landscape, featuring a diverse collection of native Texas plants. Our team donated supplies and their time digging up rare native Texas plants from a prairie and then relocating them to the Arboretum, as a part of the Volunteer Time Off (VTO) program.
